Tell me about the PlaceProps® App.

  • In a nutshell, what is the PlaceProps App about?

PlaceProps App is the easy way to get paid for the places you go and take notes about the places you’ve been. NO ADS. NO USER FEES. EVER.

  • Where does the name “PlaceProps” come from?

The name comes from giving someone or something “proper respect” or “props,” (as in “Props to you for downloading our app!”). Places you pass and visit, and those you choose to remember, earn proper respect with PlaceProps. You create value for them, and you create value for yourself as well.

  • Why did you create PlaceProps?

Each of us is a part of an “audience” for shops, venues, and advertisements as we move about in the real world. Avenace (think “avenue” and “place”) is our Seattle-based company that created the PlaceProps App and PlaceProps Analytics. Our founders have been developing technology for the media business for over 30 years, producing audience measurement systems for TV, place-based media, and out-of-home advertising displays. With PlaceProps, Avenace is creating audience measurement for places in the real world.

  • How does PlaceProps “create value” for me?

Other Internet companies collect personal information about you so they can direct advertising at you. Your data creates value for them. That’s not PlaceProps.

PlaceProps helps you realize the value of your demographic and persistent location information by compensating you for anonymously sharing it as a member of a research panel, (a “Propper”), representing others like you in your community. Your data creates value for you, while helping make your community a better place to live and work.

  • What does opting-in as a Propper mean for me?

When you opt in as a Propper, you choose either to be paid or to have us make a donation to a selected charity. You also have access to the App’s “Props” functions.

In exchange, you agree to allow us to collect, use, and store your persistent location and demographic information to create aggregated and anonymized audience reports (“PlaceProps Analytics”) and for other data analysis purposes. We do not provide any individualized location or demographic information directly to PlaceProps Analytics customers.

Tell me about PlaceProps Analytics.

  • Who are PlaceProps Analytics customers?

Our customers are companies, city planners, even individuals. They use PlaceProps Analytics to understand where people spend their time in the real world – what businesses, venues, and advertisements they pass and visit as they move about – to improve business and community development decision-making. For example, such organizations may be:

    • A chain of coffee houses choosing the location for a new shop, where target customers may walk past it during lunch hour,
    • Community planners determining the best streets for bike lanes,
    • An auto dealership leasing the billboard most likely to be seen by its target audience,
    • Someone trying to decide on a neighborhood for a new apartment.

Even you could be a PlaceProps Analytics customer!

  • What do you mean, “aggregated and anonymized audience reports”?

Data get transformed in PlaceProps Analytics.

First, Proppers’ PlaceProps App data are combined to give an aggregated picture of what our Proppers, taken as a group, do. (For example, we might observe that 10% of our male Proppers, between the ages of 25 and 40, pass a possible location for a sandwich shop in a particular neighborhood once a week.) Because this aggregate information does not contain any personally identifiable information, it is also anonymized.

Next we project those Proppers’ numbers to the total population of the greater community. (So adjusting for how our Proppers represent the general population, we could perhaps report that 17% of all people who pass that location weekly are males between 25 and 40.) Projection is another step in the anonymizing process: what was “personally identifiable as” has become “impersonally characteristic of”.

So in our PlaceProps Analytics audience reports for our customers, you represent other people like you in the community – the “audience” for places – just as Nielsen families represent other TV viewers in the Nielsen ratings.

Tell me what it’s like being a Propper.

  • Can anyone be a Propper?

Initially we are recruiting a limited number of people in a specific geographic area. If PlaceProps is not yet operating in your zip code you will be offered a position on a waitlist for when we expand. We will request basic demographic information such as age, gender, and education when you register. Teens between 14 and 17 years old may participate as Proppers, but we recommend they first obtain the permission of their parent or guardian. Children under 14 years old are not eligible to participate. By opting in, you are representing to us that you are 14 years of age or older.

  • When are payments made?

Compensation occurs every other Friday, for Proppers who have been contributing location data for at least five days during the preceding two-week period. Compensation currently is $2.50 per pay period, or $65.00/year. The payment or donation amount and the payment schedule are subject to change upon notice, and you may opt out at any time if you do not wish to continue.

  • What are the payment and donation options?

You can choose between (a) compensation via PayPal sent to the e-mail address you used for account registration, (b) compensation via an Amazon Gift Card* sent to the e-mail address you used for account registration, or (c) a contribution to a local charity, based on the option you select from our list. You can change your preference at any time in the App by going to Proppers Settings. Your selection will be locked in the day before each biweekly payment date. We may change the available charities from time to time, and will switch your compensation to an Amazon Gift Card if you select a charity that we later drop from the list, until you designate an alternate charity or compensation method.

PLEASE NOTE: If you select the PayPal compensation option, then you must have or create a PayPal account that is associated with the e-mail you use to register in PlaceProps, in order to complete payments. If, for any reason, we are unable to complete payment to you via an Amazon Gift Card or PayPal, (e.g., if you do not have a PayPal account or such account is not associated with the e-mail address you used when you registered), and Amazon or PayPal returns the funds to us, then we reserve the right to direct the donation to a charity of our choosing from our published list.

You may change your e-mail address or compensation options in Proppers Settings.

  • How did you pick the charities?

First off, we looked for charities that have a presence in your community. We looked for a variety of fields and services, from providing food and social services, to the arts, literacy, medicine, education, and the environment among many others. And we looked for charities that serve large and varied parts of the population in your community.

In the future, we hope our Proppers will make suggestions for other charities. We believe that keeping the list short will concentrate the contributions, to have a greater impact on the charities we support together and the community they serve. Charities could vary, month by month, or we could create a slot to serve immediate needs, such as at times of natural disaster, or the needs of others outside of our community.

Please note that while we try to select reliable charities, we exercise no control over and are not responsible or liable in any manner for the actions of any charities we select or how they use the funds they receive.

  • How do you protect my personal information?

We minimize the personal information we collect. For example, we do not ask for your name. PlaceProps Analytics only contain aggregated and anonymized information: we do not share with customers any individualized information. And we take reasonable security measures to protect your personal and location information.

PLEASE NOTE: It may happen that your name will be inadvertently collected if you use it in your e-mail address or in correspondence with us. However, we will never ask you for your name, address, or any bank or third party (e.g., Paypal or Amazon.com) account numbers or passwords. To protect the confidentiality of personal information, you must keep your PlaceProps password confidential and not disclose it to any other person.

To learn more, please read our Privacy Policy.

  • What controls do I have over my PlaceProps+ account and information?

You can change your e-mail address and password, request support or e-mail us, read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use Agreement, navigate to Proppers Settings, and log out of the PlaceProps App, all from the main mobile Settings page. (To get there, tap the Settings “gear” symbol in the upper left corner of the screen.)

In Proppers Settings you also have the option to create a “Privacy Zone.” When you are physically in that geographic zone, none of your location information will be collected or stored.

In addition, Proppers may also stop the automatic collection and storage of location information at any time, temporarily or permanently, by opting out as a Propper or by uninstalling the App. Please note, however, that we reserve the right to suspend compensation to Proppers who remain opted out for more than 24 hours, but will in most cases resume compensation after they opt back in.

Opting out of being a Propper, terminating your account, or uninstalling the App will not affect our ability to use and store any information previously collected, and we may retain and use Proppers’ location information indefinitely. However, if you terminate your account and send us an e-mail at support@placeprops.com confirming such termination then (a) upon request, Avenace will delete the location information associated with your Proppers account that was collected after the most recent date on which you were compensated; and (b) we will disassociate your location information from your e-mail or other personally identifiable information (e.g., by changing the e-mail associated with the location information to a random string of characters or such other method as we may determine). PLEASE NOTE that these steps may not occur if you merely opt out of being a Propper or terminate your account without notifying us at the e-mail indicated above.

You may also opt out of receiving marketing or promotional e-mails from us by following the instructions in those e-mails, or by sending us a request to that effect by return e-mail. If you opt out, we may still send you non-promotional e-mails, such as e-mails about your account or our ongoing business relations.

  • Will being a Propper affect how I use my smartphone?

Nope. You just download the App, register and opt in, and get on with your life.

Tell me about PlaceProps and pinned locations.

  • What are PlaceProps pinned locations?

With PlaceProps you can keep a mapped record of places that matter to you, and share them with friends in your own private network. (Our pedantic CFO calls this “geographically indexed note-taking.”) For example, “drop a Prop” on your local coffee shop’s address to recall the name of their barista, or to save the locations of stores that friends recommend in another city. Use PlaceProps to show friends where to meet for a hike or for dinner before a game – even if they don’t have the PlaceProps App. Keep track of neighborhood gardens or holiday lights you want to revisit. Mark the location of an eagle’s nest in a bird preserve.

  • How do I “drop a Prop”?

First you pick the location for the Prop on the App’s map. On your mobile, you can zoom to your current location by tapping nav. You can zoom to an address you enter using the pop-up keyboard. Or using the touchscreen, you can move the map around so the location you choose is visible.

Then you touch the prop+ in the upper right corner of the screen, and make sure the red balloon drops at the right location on the map for your Prop. When you tap on the in the lower right corner, the screen will change to let you name the Prop and add a photo and notes about the place and the people associated with it. Tap “Create Prop” and you are done! The Prop will now show up in your “Show all Props” list and on your map as a green balloon.

  • How do I navigate to a Prop?

Select a Prop you have created from “Show All Props” or by tapping on its green balloon on the map, and then tap its information. That will open the Prop’s notes page. Tap “Options,” and then tap “Navigate to Prop.” That will open navigation directions in Apple or Google Maps (depending on your mobile’s operating system). To return to PlaceProps, you will need to close out of the navigation app and reopen the App.

  • How do I swap Props with friends?

It’s easy. Each Prop has a six-letter ID. Tap the share icon in the top right corner of a Prop’s contents page, and you can choose between e-mail and text message (SMS) to send the ID and a URL link to your friends. They can log in to their own PlaceProps accounts and add your Prop. Even if they don’t have PlaceProps accounts, the URL link allows them to view the Prop contents in a web browser. Swapped Props show up on the receivers’ maps as blue balloons.

Alternatively, you can also just jot down a Prop’s six-digit ID (e.g., ABCDEF) and give it to your friends. After tapping the prop+ icon in the upper right corner of the screen, your friends can enter that Prop’s ID to add it to their accounts using the propid icon at the bottom left corner of the screen.

You can also choose whether your friends can edit the Props you swap or not.

  • What controls do I have over my Props information?

Your Props contain information you have created. We store that information for you, and facilitate your use and sharing of it. We do not use it for any PlaceProps Analytics product. You may opt out of the further collection of Props information at any time by ceasing use of, logging out of, or uninstalling the App. You may request the deletion of your Props by deleting the App and sending us an e-mail at support@placeprops.com confirming the termination of your account and requesting such deletion. However, the information in the Props you have swapped with friends may continue to exist for a time in others’ accounts, along with certain cached or archived copies.

Tell me what else I should know.

  • Will the App affect my battery life?

Every app will affect your battery life to some degree. We have prioritized efforts, from software design to data collection timing and methodology, to reduce the drain on your battery. If at any time your battery status drops below a given level, PlaceProps+ will alter its location collection to decrease drastically its use of the remaining power.

  • Is using the App time-consuming for me?

It’s really up to you as to how interactive you want to be with the App. You can drop Props when and where you choose, with as many notes as you choose, swapping them with friends as you wish. As for being a Propper, you can opt in and then just rely on default settings, (e.g., being compensated through PayPal), or you can check occasionally to see if there are different charities to consider and to view your account information. You can check out the Heatmap feature, displaying Proppers’ movements around their communities. We also will use our website and Facebook to post information about the App, funds being raised for charities, and ideas from you and other Proppers about how we can improve our services.

  • Which mobile platforms support PlaceProps?

Currently PlaceProps Apps are available for both Google’s Android (on Google Play) and Apple’s iOS (in the App Store). PlaceProps will also run on Apple iPad devices, but the user interface is built with the iPhone in mind.

  • Why do you need my e-mail address?

We need an active e-mail address from you to establish contact information and for your account username. For example, we will use such information to direct payments through PayPal or Amazon Gift Cards to Proppers, to supply customer service, and to contact you to impart any essential information regarding the App, the Terms of Use Agreement, the Privacy Policy, or other updates. See our Privacy Policy for more information on how we may use your e-mail address.

  • What if the App doesn’t work as it should?

A preliminary troubleshooting step for you should be to log out and log back in to PlaceProps.

We have included code from Crittercism, Crashlytics, Flurry and/or Google Analytics in the App, to monitor performance and track any unusual behavior such as crashes, and to alert us to fixes we need to make. You’re welcome to visit their websites to learn more.

If you find you have stability issues with the App, please check the App Store or Google Play for updates – with our apologies. And you can always send us questions or feedback to support@placeprops.com.
